Higher Education

The Johnstone College of TAFE is a College of Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT). The Innisfail Campus was opened on 28th October 1988.

Vocational Education and Training in Australia has made some very difficult and important transitions of late. Most importantly is the establishment of a national training system. TAFE has also recently moved from being "supply driven" to being a more "demand driven" (ie industry-led) system.

The Johnstone College of TAFE with campuses at Innisfail and Tully delivered training to 1 850 students in the year 2000. The following graph breaks down the students into areas of study.

The objectives of the Institute include responding promptly to client needs by delivering training to reflect and embrace the changing market. This means, in many cases, delivering training in the workplace. TAFE uses accredited training packages, wherever these are available, and tries to deliver these in as flexible a manner as possible.
